Changing with the Seasons: Winter to Spring

Its March 21st.. HELLO SPRING!

Ok, its still pretty cold right now, but Mr Sun has been poking his head out a lot more in the last few weeks, and despite having to still occasionally de-ice my car, I’m definitely starting to feel this Spring thing coming on.

So with the seasons changing, what else do we change?

Scents

Say goodbye to cinnamon and winter spiced scented candles and hello to fresh floral fragrances. There’s also significantly less pumpkin spice and gingerbread smells coming from Starbucks.

Colours

Oh hi there pastels! As much as everyone rocks deep lipstick colours, the sunshine welcomes back the reign of pinks and corals, and the same goes for our clothes too.

Food

As the mince pies disappear from supermarket shelves, we obviously can’t wait for the return of Creme Eggs! Suddenly the warming soups we’ve turned to in winter are dropping off menus everywhere and being replaced with fresh salads and pastas.

Wardrobe

While we aren’t always lucky enough to put our warm jumpers away just yet, we can welcome back the idea of light layers. Of course we’re already thinking about our summer wardrobes at this point, so tights become every girls best friend as it gives us an excuse to wear those cute new dresses we snagged in the ASOS sale.

Home

Yay for fresh flowers, and excuse to buy pretty vases, am I right? Its also time to put away the extra blankets we’ve piled up on our bed over the winter months, and of course, with all this spring cleaning, we’ll be feeling like domestic goddesses!

Are you ready for Spring to begin? I know I am!

Friday Favourite Five – Winter Warmer Hot Drinks

I know we’re supposed to be coming out of winter, but the weather seems to think otherwise, and temperatures still seem to be dropping.. Its the time of year for curling up under the covers with a cute mug of your favourite hot drink, and since I am the anomaly that doesn’t really drink tea or coffee, my favourites are all a little different!

1. Gu Salted Caramel hot chocolate

This is a carton of chocolate dreams! Pre-mixed and ready for the microwave, this creamy delight is just so delicious!

2. Peanut Hottie

My love of peanut butter is really no secret, so this discovery has opened up a whole new world of hot drink goodness for me!

3. Options hot chocolate

The proof is in the name; there are so many flavours to choose from in both instant and ‘add milk’ varieties, and I love the little sachets for taking to work with me!

4. Teapigs Rooibos Creme Caramel tea

I’m really not a tea drinker, but this real leaf tea is so sweet and perfect for a nice milky drink before bed!

5. Whittards Luxury White hot chocolate

When a regular hot choc won’t hit the spot, I love white hot chocolate! Creamy and delicious!

Do you have a go-to winter warmer?

Friday Favourite Five – Winter Hats

Another Friday has rolled around, although after a week of being back at work properly its felt like forever since last Friday..

I’m really not enjoying this cold weather. I think because October-December was so mild, I didn’t get used to the cold before going away, and now I’ve been thrown into it since getting home, I’ve had no time to adjust or grow my winter wardrobe.

What I do love about this time of year though is winter hats. I like all sorts of hats really, but winter is the only time I really make the effort to wear them, probably because its more of a necessity than anything else! And thus..

1. The good ol’ fashioned beanie, but yellow, cos y’know..

2. BAYMAX BEANIE

3. This cutesy little Children In Need Pudsey hat

4. Mickey Mouse pom-poms!

5. In case a beanie is a little understated and I need full blown Minnie Mouse style..

Are you a hat person?

Winter Run Wear

Its the season of big coats, woolly hats and hands stuffed into pockets because you forgot your gloves yet again, and any excuse to stay home in the warmth is welcomed with open arms, unless you’re a runner..

We’re a strange breed, and a year or two ago I would look out on those braving the low temperatures to get in a training run and think ‘is it really worth it?’, but now I’m part of this world I welcome a brisk winter run because I know how to dress for the occasion.

My first winter essential is my fleece, which I save for the coldest weather; its great for keeping away the chill while you’re out, but once you get back home you’re gonna want to whip it off pretty quick before you start to cook!

Next staple of mine is a bunch of lightweight long sleeved tops, like this once from Asics. On cool days, you might worry that they’re not gonna keep you warm, but once you get going you’ll warm up nicely, but also avoid overheating. Something I love about running in colder weather is that its cool enough to run with my hair down, so chunky headbands that keep the cool off my ears and the hair out of my face are pretty great!

I love my bodywarmer in the winter months – its super lightweight and not at all bulky, but at the same time makes all the difference out in the cold. I would also recommend a lightweight infinity scarf; even if you don’t want to run wearing it, it’ll help keep you warm once you start your cool-down.

Bring on the thermals! Forget the idea that they’re thick or too hot, and find yourself a nice light one because you’ll be amazed how much warmer they’ll make you! Sometimes I also like to wear a hat – you lose a lot of body heat from your head, so it helps prevent you cooling down too much, and the same principle applies to gloves!

Finally, the dreaded waterproof jacket! I say dreaded because who likes running in the rain, right? Well, like it or not, a lot of runners still do it, so the waterproof is fairly essential. I found shopping for mine pretty tricky; a lot of jackets claim ‘splashproof’ or ‘water resistant’, rather than waterproof, so you have to take a risk on whether you’ll be fully protected from the weather, but generally I would recommend avoiding cheaper/high street brands and go to a proper sports brand!

Once you’re fully equipped for the cold, there’s nothing to stop you from keeping up your training through the winter months. You never know, you might enjoy it!

A Mickey-inspired Winter Look

So I was out shopping with a girlfriend today, and as two, not-entirely-broke-but-on-a-budget girls, h&m is our haven. And that’s where I came across this little beauty of a beanie hat, and at the same time as completely falling in love with it, inspiration struck!

I know its still a little early to be thinking about really, but its time to start preparing your wardrobe for winter, so here’s a Mickey Mouse inspired look to get you started 🙂

Obviously you’re gonna be needing this hat:

Then there’s this sweet little swing dress from ASOS

But its cold, so don’t forget to wear tights! These are from Primark, and are also available on eBay

And a hint of red with these suede boots from Office

Just how sweet are these handmade fingerless gloves from Xasper8ing on Etsy?!
